Hi, I'm Martin

I'm a developer, learner, fitness enthusiast and martial arts geek. I live on the south coast of England, near Chichester. I have enjoyed my career as a customer service professional, but I am loving becoming a developer and making things - whilst levelling-up my Google search skills along the way!

I am a fan of the Wheel of Time novels and have enjoyed some of J.R.R. Tolkien's books too. Self development is a big driver for me, so outside of the fantasy novels I'll have my head stuck in various books to improve my skills, knowledge and general approach to life.

ABOUT

  • Certified developer

I have completed a full stack development course, earning certificates in the following:

    • MTA Intro to Programming with Python
    • HTML5 & CSS3
    • MTA Software Fundamentals
    • Java 8 OCA
  • Collaborative

As a seasoned contributor and facilitator of workshops with colleagues and customers, I am a believer in the power of collaboration. Having experienced working with Developers as an end user, I'm now looking forward to changing my role in this relationship - whilst bringing a lot of experiences with me.

  • Learner

Completing an NVQ Level 7 in Strategic Management and Leadership whilst beginning my full stack development course was a fantastic challenge for someone who loves to learn. I have started to build a small collection of courses to enhance my coding skills.

  • Customer experience

I am an admirer of those organisations who get the experience right, no matter the customer touch point. I have enjoyed working to improve the experience of customers through the service provided and the reduction of friction. Using data, customer and colleague feedback to focus efforts, then measure the impact through CSAT and NPS alongside internal metrics.

PROJECTS

Hangman Game:
Python

The final project for the Stanford University Code in Place course. This game (a favourite of my children) pulled a random word from an external file, then play through the challenge of guessing what the word was before the maximum number of incorrect guesses was reached. I went beyond the original brief to include some images and outcomes that were more specific to the current point in the game.

Namesurfer Program:
Java

Created as part of the Stanford University CS106A course. This program displays the distribution of names chosen for children over the last 100 years in the United States. This program takes data from a .txt file and, depending on the user input, displays it in a graph. Additional code was created to improve the display and user experience.

Website:
Bootstrap

A local business wanted a fully responsive website that matched their branding and showcased their skills. A one-pager that looks great on a desktop and mobile, with a focus on images and clarifying the type of work they undertake. I kept to the colours and font style seen on their fleet of vehicles. The design and available suitable options changed depending on the size of the device visiting the site.

Website:
HTML & CSS

The founder of Tomia wanted their Link page to be responsive, simplistic and to reflect their branding. This is the first page viewed by visitors driven through social media - where most of their traffic originates. The web site is hosted by Shopify.
